Studio Marcadet is situated in the African neighborhood “la Goûtte d’Or” in the 18th district of Paris. The existing studio is situated on the 1st floor of an apartment building constructed in the 90’: it consisted of a traditional plan with entrance hall, bathroom and living room with an open kitchen module. Main concern of the space is the lack of viewing depth and poor natural lighting due to due to one north exposed window and its 1st floor position. Secondary concerns are the lack of an equipped kitchen, storage and functional space occupancy in the bathroom.
By demolishing the wall and door separating hall from living room we open the entrance hall towards the living room and give more visual depth and perspective from both point of views. To give a function and identity to the hall we connect these two spaces by introducing a custom furniture element making a serpent-like movement from entrance to kitchen. Its morphology and birch plywood as finishing material make it blend into the interior as a functional and decorative element. Functional because of its integrated functions, such as dressing, storage and fully equipped kitchen. Decorative because of its form and birch plywood material that establishes a warm atmosphere in the studio.
Bathroom position remains the same as before but gets functional and esthetic improvements. By replacing bathtub with shower we create space for a large closable storage element with washing machine integrated. Positions of toilet and sink get inversed giving a better functional circulation inside the small space. Above them we created a storage element with mirror and integrated illumination with dimmer. The storage doors are also in Birch plywood creating a warm visual effect and contrast with the overall white tint.
